Woodlark - Cornelius Hotel
The project consists of an evaluation and retrofitting of two historic buildings for use as a single new hotel. Sharing half a city block in downtown Portland, Oregon are the Woodlark and Cornelius Buildings—this chapter of the calculations report focuses on the Woodlark which is a concrete building originally constructed in the early 1910s with 9 stories above ground and a basement level.
The Cornelius Building was a building originally constructed in 1908 of timber and masonry that stands 7 stories above ground. Analysis and recommendations are provided herein for the strengthening of existing structure to meet Life Safety standards in the event of a Design Basis Earthquake. Special Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls are provided at key locations throughout the two building as the primary method of lateral strength rehabilitation with special steel moment frames at places where the aesthetic limitations inherent to shear walls are encountered.
